Seeking Education Appeals Tribunal Members

Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in is looking for Citizen representative to sit on the Yukon’s Education Appeal Tribunal. The Tribunal is established under the provisions of the Education Act to hear and determine appeals of certain decisions made by the Department of Education, schools, or school councils and school boards. The tribunal has authority to hear and determine appeals on the following matters:

  • The identification of a student’s special needs and the implementation of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • The content of a student’s record
  • Student suspensions
  • Locally developed courses of study

The time commitment for this committee is generally fairly minimal. When there are appeals, tribunal members have additional work to plan for and hear appeals. Many regular meetings can take place online, but travel for training and appeals is covered at Yukon Government per diem rates. There is some training that tribunal members need to take to ensure that they are following fair processes with respect to hearings and decision making.  Participation is paid via honorarium at the rate of $200 per day.
